Internal Revenue Service — the good and the need-to-improve stuff

The Good
IRS Direct File is the pilot program that allowed  taxpayers (in 12 states) to file their  taxes for free (subject to certain limitations, of course).

Earlier this month, IRS announced that Direct File is becoming permanent.
Taxpayers can use this free tool to file their  federal tax returns.
And the Agency (IRS) is actively working to make this option available across the nation.

The Need-to-Improve
It appears that IRS’ selections as to who to  audit is possibly bias.
(We’re talking about audits of refundable credit returns.)

So the Government Accountability Office (GAO) is telling IRS they need to address this issue.

The GAO recommended to IRS to implement six changes, including developing clear guidance for assessing algorithmic bias in their systems; and assessment of the reliability of the databases it uses.

The IRS agrees.
(See, IRS can be agreeable 😊 😁 )
