SUCCESS STARTS WITH THIS
Success, in business and in personal life, starts with this:
SAY WHAT YOU DO AND DO WHAT YOU SAY
“Her word is like a contract!” In my opinion, this is one of the highest and most valued compliments a person can get. And it applies to business as well as personal relationships.
Do what you say
Remember these words, “Your reputation precedes you”. Because it’s true – it does!
In business, as well as in your personal life, being true to your word is what your reputation is built on. And people will conduct business with you (or not) based on your reputation.
Two key factors:
- Show up in time
If you say you’ll be there at 9:00, then be there at 9:00! If you can’t, then call and let them know.
Have respect for other people’s time. - Deliver on your promises
Both time and quality are equally important. Have the work done how and when you said it will get done. Not a week or a month later! And not by cutting corners in workmanship. If circumstances beyond your control call for adjustments, DO inform the customer.
Don’t just keep quiet, hoping it won’t get noticed.
Aim to get the job done on time and better than promised!
All of this can be put in two words: Underpromise and Overdeliver.
Say what you do
Keep your customers informed.
Educate them about why certain things can, and other things cannot, be done.
Educate them.
The buyers need to be educated about your products and services. This doesn’t mean you need to spend a lot of time and go through everything from A to Z.
A great example of this was when I needed to make some changes in my kitchen. The countertop guy explained to me the difficulty of a certain cut. I appreciated that – and it helped justify the higher price also. It turned out beautifully. And I had a new appreciation for the contractor and the type of work he did.
Don’t assume people will know by osmosis what you do, what you intend to do, and why it needs to get done a certain way.
Say what you do
And
Do what you say
Do both of these and you’ll build a reputation of being a man of your word. This, my friend, will put you a step ahead of many others. And success, however you define it, will be within your reach.
