Why should we care?
Rio de Janeiro.
The city has been called one of the most beautiful places on earth.
And in a few weeks will be home to the 2016 Summer Olympics.
The eyes of the world will be riveted on its spectacular landscape; and… its environmental problems.
The city is heavily polluted.
It’s polluted by its residents: entire communities in the region lack sewage collection.
And it’s polluted by the petroleum industry: one of its biggest refineries is right on the banks of the Guanabara Bay.
Broken eco-barriers allow chemicals to leak into the water.
Why should we care?
Maybe because our place of birth is Earth.
And what happens thousands of miles away,
sooner or later,
one way or another,
it will affect us.
